Pope Leo XIV
In seeming direct refutation of the US administration’s invocation of the Christian God in its war on Iran, Pope Leo XIV on Palm Sunday 2026 insisted that on the original Good Friday Jesus: “revealed the gentle face of God, who always rejects violence. Rather than saving himself, he allowed himself to be nailed to the cross, embracing every cross borne in every time and place throughout human history.”
The Pope continued: “Brothers and sisters, this is our God: Jesus, King of Peace, who rejects war, whom no one can use to justify war. “
In the previous week, at a service for military personnel, the US Secretary for War, Pete Hegseth had prayed in different terms for the success of the US month-old campaign against Iran: “Let every round find its mark against the enemies of righteousness and our great nation. Give them wisdom in every decision, endurance for the trial ahead, unbreakable unity, and overwhelming violence of action against those who deserve no mercy.”
In contrast, on Palm Sunday Pope Leo quoted the prophet Isaiah on the futility of prayers to God for victory in war: “He does not listen to the prayers of those who wage war, but rejects them, saying: ‘Even though you make many prayers, I will not listen: your hands are full of blood'” (Is 1:15).
