“If anyone wants to criticise me for proclaiming the gospel, let them do so with the truth: the church has spoken out against all nuclear weapons for years, there is no doubt about that. I simply hope to be listened to because of the value of God’s word.”
These are Pope Leo XIV‘s reported words on Wed 6th May 2026 – in response to questions on reported strong criticism of the pope from US President Donald Trump.
Earlier US President Trump had told a US talkshow host: “The pope would rather talk about the fact that it’s OK for Iran to have a nuclear weapon, and I don’t think that’s very good.”
Scheduled to meet with Mr Trump’s Secretary of State, Marco Rubio, on Thursday May 7th, it seems likely that Pope Leo (or his own Secretary of State Cardinal Pietro Parolin) will inquire politely why President Trump feels free to misrepresent completely the pope’s position on nuclear armaments. The difference of opinion between the two world leaders on the 2026 US and Israeli war with Iran is currently exciting the world’s media.
It was a member of President Trump’s staff during his first term 2016-2020 who coined the phrase ‘alternative facts’ – and by 2026 the world has become used to the unfortunate reality that Mr Trump seldom lets truth get in the way of a good insult.
