Child Safeguarding is not evenly implemented across the global Catholic Church, according to the first report of the Pontifical Commission for the Protection of Minors released on October 29, 2024.
Levels of awareness and readiness to grapple with the issue differ widely internationally, while cultural differences – e.g. in Africa and the Far East – also play a part.
Additionally there are misgivings in relation to the reliability of all of the data received by the commission for the report – an issue that is related to the accountability of bishops, which is also not yet secure internationally, according to Fr Hans Zollner, a prominent papal adviser on child safeguarding.
