Three northern bishops are asking the Vatican for a postponement of the merging of the Catholic dioceses of Raphoe and Derry, according to a report in the Irish Catholic newspaper.
With Bishop Donal McKeown of Derry reaching the retirement age of 75 in April 2025, and Bishop Alan McGuckian now moved from Raphoe to Down and Connor, the paper is reporting a Vatican intention to Merge Raphoe and Derry with the appointment of a successor to Bishop McKeown.
However, according to the report, Archbishop Eamon Martin of Armagh and Bishop McGuckian believe the merger would be inopportune at this time, and Bishop McKeown has flown to Rome to appeal for a postponement.
