“International Humanitarian Law says that parties to a conflict cannot use disproportionate measures to achieve military objectives. The near-complete destruction of Gaza, and the bringing of its population to the brink of famine is, by any standard, a disproportionate measure.”
These are the words of Archbishop Eamon Martin of Armagh, in a New Year message deploring the failure of the ‘international community’ to contain the violence of conflict in the Middle East and elsewhere in 2024.
“I pray today with Pope Francis, ‘May the sound of arms be silenced … May there be a ceasefire, may the hostages be released and aid be given to the people worn out by hunger and by war … May the doors of dialogue and peace be flung open throughout the region, devastated by conflict.'”
