Because of our received traditional misunderstanding of ‘Salvation’ there is a ‘void’, a blank, at the heart of our evangelisation in Ireland.
This is the contention of Dr Kieran O’Mahony of Ireland’s Tarsus Scripture School – currently bidding to help fill this void with an online course on the scriptural language of ‘salvation’ – centred on the Gospel of St John, the letters of St Paul and the Letter to the Hebrews.
‘Redemption’?
Describing our received tradition as a ‘story of Adam and Jesus’ and of ‘sin, anger, punishment and redemption’, Dr O’Mahony says that the word ‘redemption’ is ‘too freighted with harmful misunderstandings’ – but that as yet we have not replaced this received story with anything ‘as powerful and as resonant’.
Launched in early March 2024, the recorded course – Being Saved…From What…For What – is now being made available online.
