Setting a new precedent for the Catholic church, an entire martyred Polish family of nine, including a newborn child, is to be beatified on September 10th, 2023, placing them en route for sainthood.

The entire Ulma family was executed by Nazi Germany in 1944, along with eight Jews they had hidden in the attic of their home in defiance of strict Nazi wartime laws – at the time of the Holocaust of European Jews, 1942-45.

The seven children of Josef and Wiktoria Ulma included a newborn child.

The whole family are to be beatified in their own town of Markowa, east of Krakow, on Sunday 10th September, 2023.

With Pope Francis’s approval the family were declared martyrs on December 17, 2022 – clearing the path for their beatification. The pope referred to the family’s heroism in his August 30th general audience, saying that “holiness and heroic deeds are achieved through fidelity in everyday small things.”
