Galway Catholic diocese has announced that the remains of Bishop Eamonn Casey, who died in 2017, have been removed from Galway cathedral and returned to his family for private burial.
The interment of Bishop Casey’s remains in Galway cathedral became especially controversial in July 2024 when RTE broadcast allegations that the bishop had abused a number of children, including a niece – who alleged that she had been abused by her uncle from the age of five. Following the RTE programme the diocese asked for ‘time and space’ to consider the issue.
For those with access, the Irish Times report on the removal can be found here.
