Pope Francis: ‘Evolution … is not inconsistent with the notion of creation’ (NCR)

The National Catholic Reporter informs us that Pope Francis has waded into the controversial debate over the origins of human life.  It quotes the Pope as saying, “Evolution in nature is not opposed to the notion of Creation, because evolution presupposes the creation of beings that evolve.”

That Pope Francis has felt the need to speak on this issue could suggest a keenness to halt any Catholic doctrinal slide towards ‘literal’ or ‘young earth’ creationism and is in keeping with Vatican IIs Pastoral Constitution on the Modern World, Gaudium et Spes, which promoted a better relationship between religion and science, seeing them as allies, not enemies.  Read NCR article in full here ………
