As a warning voice on the dangers of artificial intelligence Pope Leo XIV is a powerful counterweight to the major players in ‘Silicon Valley’ – (shorthand for the digital computer Titans now investing billions in AI).
This is ‘Time‘ magazine’s assessment of the pope’s likely influence – given his obvious grasp of the subject and his global audience of 1.4 billion Catholics worldwide..
Time reports that Pope Leo has warned that the technology – although potentially beneficial – could be used for “selfish gain at the expense of others, or worse, to foment conflict and aggression.”
The pope has also especially warned against AI’s possible negative effects on the educational development of children and young people.
The magazine has nominated Pope Leo as one of its ‘top 100’ authorities on AI for 2025. “Silicon Valley faces a formidable — and unexpected — spiritual counterweight.”
