Trump’s Immigration Policy for Venezuelans ‘Counterproductive’: US RC Bishops

We urge them to consider the adverse impact this step will have on citizens and noncitizens alike,” said a spokesperson for the U.S. Catholic Bishops on Feb 3rd – in reference to a US government decision to revoke temporary legal protection for immigrants in flight from Venezuela, currently in economic freefall and governed by a dictatorship.

“Terminating this temporary legal protection that allows people to work, pay taxes, and contribute to our society will only lead to more disruption and would appear to risk diverting the focus of enforcement efforts away from legitimate threats to public safety.”, said bishops’ spokesperson Chieko Noguchi.

“This decision is a betrayal of our nation’s moral and legal obligations to protect those fleeing violence and persecution,” said Anna Gallagher, executive director of the Catholic Legal Immigration Network in a Jan. 30 statement. “Stripping temporary legal protections from Venezuelans not only exposes a very vulnerable population to deportation but also contradicts our core values as a nation rooted in values of justice and protecting the oppressed.
